Ikea Garment Performance

This is my conceptual garment project. The male model posed as an ottoman in Ikea which matched a preexisting chair. The idea was derived from looking at the work of Allen Jones. I felt like offering something on the other end of that. But it seems to function more in relation to the Ikea environment alone. What do you think?

This is funny. I don't know what my response would be if I saw this performance in person, most likely I would just think "That's funny" and continue to buy my Stoonergen kitchen towels. But I really like the photos. They are so weird. Especially the one where we can see the guys face and he seems so serious and ridiculous. Also, the one with the pillow over his face. It all seems so odd. Conceptually I have no idea what this is about, but I still like it.

I agree! I think it's sort of about the consciousness of shopping at Ikea. It certainly is funny, and we can all pretty much agree that Ikea is ridiculous, even if it does offer a seductively cheap array of gorgeously diffused paper lighting products (I own 3. eek.)

To me, this piece addresses the strange phenomenon of the Ikea aesthetic supposedly forming the identity of a person's or a space's style - more than any other home decor brand would seem to do, while noting that we all seem to get such a kick out of it...

Allen Jones' work appears to be a social commentary on how women are objectified. He portrays women as subservient to males, quite literally posing them as an object for men to lay on/rest on. I feel that the positioning of the women models are also vital in getting that message across.
Im wondering what would happen if you were to instruct your model to possess a certain poise that would better allude to the idea behind your project.

Your decision to have this preformed in Ikea is very interesting, and there is certainly much to comment on about that place! Like Cate said, Im wondering if this project could be about the particular group of people who frequent this kind of store. Maybe its the collegiate crowd you want to talk about, or the group of gentrifying-yuppies that often shop here that is the target. It seems that your otto-man is in fact a college student, so why not invite a whole class of twenty-somethings to pose as furniture and make the art be about our generation's disposable, one-time-use-loving culture. That, in turn, might reflect how ikea consumers are themselves very dispensable (I mean, who doesn't think that yuppies aren't?). Doing something similar to this would greatly improve the bite of your message.
